new media and what young people should know...

As I am looking at entry level Public Relations jobs, I feel confident and weary about my experience and skills with new media. I am textbook confident, in that I know what it is and how it should be used. I even have some experience using it. But I am weary to advertise it as a skill I possess when applying for a job. There is so much about blogging that I don't know and I have no clue how much my potential employers may know.

I am by no means an expert, but I know enough to start learning.

Hi Kaitlyn!

I am a postgraduate student of Public Relations and I also run my own blog, as part of the module PR and technology. I think we are really lucky that our courses have given us the chance to come to grips with the new media. If it wasn't for that specific module, I would have no idea about what's going on in the blogosphere and what RSS, social media press release, twitter, Facebook etc are and how they affect the PR practice. But I share the same speculation with you, about what do I really know about all these media. Every single day sth new emerges, and I have to be informed about it. There is an information overload for me the last weeks, and I really doubt if I am able to handle it, and use only what is really important to me and my future as PR practitioner. But it's true...We, at least, have some knowledge that will help us learn more, useful things.

Thanks for your comment...as you can see, I still have some kinks to work out in my blogging, such as response time!

I am intimidated by the large amount of information out there on the web and how to monitor it all. But like you said, at least we have some knowledge, which gives us a place to start!

As a PR practitioner are you expected to monitor what is being said in blogs for your clients? I am curious to learn how PR practitioners with some knowledge of new media use it for their clients. How often? Are some clients primarily concerned with the web?

I would definitely recommend WetFeet's series on interviewing, finding a job, resume writing, etc. Right now they are selling a package that includes an interviewing tutorial video, and it's only $79. All of the books are really useful for recent grads or people graduating soon, but can be just as useful 10 years later.
